AYUC Spokesperson Agbégnigan Yaovi Condemns Repression in Togo, Urges Immediate National Dialogue

Lomé, Togo – June 27, 2025

As political tensions rise in Togo following a wave of youth-led protests in Lomé, the African Youth Union Commission (AYUC) has issued a strong condemnation of the government’s heavy-handed response. Speaking from the Togolese capital, Agbégnigan Yaovi, AYUC’s Director General of Communication and Information, denounced what he described as “a disproportionate and unacceptable crackdown” on peaceful demonstrators.

Over the past several days, security forces have forcefully dispersed gatherings in key neighborhoods such as Bè-Kpota, Attiegou, and near the Colombe de la Paix monument. Footage circulating on social media shows disturbing scenes of violence, prompting widespread domestic and international concern.

“The excessive use of force against peaceful young people is not only unacceptable but also counterproductive,” Yaovi stated in an exclusive interview.

Rejecting Government Allegations

The Togolese government has accused external actors of fueling unrest, but the AYUC has dismissed these claims as deflective and unsubstantiated.

“These allegations are a dishonest diversion to avoid addressing the legitimate concerns of Togo’s youth,” Yaovi asserted, reiterating that the grievances stem from long-standing socio-political frustrations, not foreign influence.

Calls for Peace and Reform

In response to the growing unrest, the AYUC is calling for an urgent and inclusive resolution process. The Commission has proposed a four-point framework aimed at de-escalating tensions and addressing the root causes of youth discontent:

  1. Immediate cessation of violence against protesters.
  2. Independent mediation under the auspices of the African Union.
  3. Convening of a national youth forum in Togo.
  4. Concrete commitments to political and social reforms.

“The time for speeches is over; concrete action is needed. Togolese youth deserve better than tear gas and arbitrary arrests,” Yaovi emphasized.

A Regional Concern

The AYUC has also raised alarms about the broader implications of the crisis. Beyond the domestic toll, the ongoing repression could have destabilizing effects on the region and harm Togo’s international standing.

“We are monitoring the situation hour by hour and remain in constant contact with our international partners, particularly the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights,” said Yaovi.

The AYUC, a pan-African youth body representing millions across the continent, has positioned itself as a key advocate for peaceful and participatory solutions. As events unfold in Togo, the organization is urging all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue over force and to engage the country’s youth as partners in national development .

However there is no immediate response from the government official of Togo.
