Togo : Agbégnigan Yaovi, Spokesperson for the African Youth Union Commission (AYUC), Condemns Repression and Demands Urgent National Dialogue

The Director General of Communication and Information of the AYUC warns against escalating security measures and advocates for a political response to the legitimate demands of the youth.

Lomé, June 27, 2025 – As tensions persist in the Togolese capital after several days of protests suppressed by security forces, Agbégnigan Yaovi, Director General of Communication and Information of the African Youth Union Commission (AYUC), speaks out firmly to condemn what he describes as a disproportionate security response by the Togolese authorities.

An Unacceptable Crackdown
Images of violent dispersals in the neighborhoods of Bè-Kpota, Attiegou, and near the Colombe de la Paix have circulated widely on social media. « The excessive use of force against peaceful young people is not only unacceptable but also counterproductive, » Yaovi stated in an exclusive interview.

The AYUC, a pan-African organization representing millions of youth across the continent, categorically rejects the government’s accusations of foreign destabilization. « These allegations are a dishonest diversion to avoid addressing the legitimate concerns of Togo’s youth, » the official asserted.

A Call for Constructive Dialogue
In response to this crisis, the AYUC proposes a resolution framework that includes:

  • The immediate cessation of all violence against protesters.
  • The establishment of independent mediation under the auspices of the African Union.
  • The organization of a national youth forum in Togo.
  • A firm commitment to political and social reforms.

« The time for speeches is over; concrete action is needed. Togolese youth deserve better than tear gas and arbitrary arrests, » Yaovi emphasized.

A Crisis with Regional Implications
The AYUC warns of the potential consequences of this crisis, including the risk of regional spillover, damage to Togo’s international reputation, and the possible radicalization of a desperate youth.

« We are monitoring the situation hour by hour and remain in constant contact with our international partners, particularly the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, » the communications director added.
