Accra, Ghana / May 26/2025 Hundreds of demonstrators flooded the streets of Ghana’s capital, Accra, on Sunday in a powerful display of solidarity with Burkina Faso’s transitional leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). The protests organized by grassroots movements denounced Western interference and celebrated Africa’s push for self-determination amid rising anti imperialist sentiment across the continent .
A Unified Call Against Imperialism
The protesters, waving placards with slogans such as “Imperialism must fall!” and “Africa must rise!” marched through Accra, chanting in support of Burkina Faso’s defiance against foreign intervention. One demonstrator emphasized:
“We are saying no more interference from the West no more breaking down of the systems that are meant to serve Africans. Africa will be free.”
Another protester drew parallels between Traore and other African leaders contrasting Burkina Faso’s stance with what they perceive as Western-aligned governance:
“The difference between these people and Ibrahim is that he is conscious of the exploitation of his people. We stand with him because he is a man born to liberate his people and possibly Africa.”
The rally comes amid escalating tensions between the AES nations Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger and Western powers, particularly France and the U.S. following the bloc’s withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in January 2025 .
